I am once again growing very concerned that too many of us simply do not know or understand our fundamental rights, let alone appreciate the gravity involved when they are violated.

If you don't know your rights, how will you know when yours or someone else's are being violated, or what to do about it and when?

I believe it's the responsibility of everyone in a (self-proclaimed) democracy to know these things, and their duty to be vigilant and prepared to stand up for them. It's not enough to say "They can't do that, can they?" or talk about suing - that's not good enough for somebody sitting in jail, deprived of a phone call or food, or being beaten up.

Some people have an exaggerated idea of what protections are in place, others have no idea at all. Before you talk about conflict de-escalation techniques, or the global problems behind OWS: first things first! Read the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Read the UN Charter of Human Rights. Don't even consider taking part in any kind of protest unless and until you do. This is the best for everybody. Nobody expects you to be a constitutional lawyer able to answer every possible question, but given what is happening these days, you ought to be familiar with the first eight sections of the Canadian Charter.
